Mount Tamborine was shaped by volcanic activity around 20 to 23 million years ago, leaving behind layers of basalt and a fractured-rock aquifer beneath the mountain.
Today, rainfall moves down through the soil and into those fractures.
As the water travels underground, it interacts naturally with the surrounding geology. Independent research on Tamborine Mountain groundwater shows that rock weathering and water-rock interaction are major influences on its natural chemistry.
